Michael Kors reinvents the stripe at New York Fashion Week
The season’s key print
The Michael Kors Collection SS’27 was presented at one of New York’s most striking locations — the Sculpture Garden of the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA. Instead of a traditional show venue, the designer chose an open setting surrounded by art, building the collection around modernism, architecture and urban life.
This time, Michael Kors moved away from his signature voluminous dresses and focused instead on architectural lines and graphic silhouettes. The familiar oversize aesthetic was almost entirely absent, replaced by fitted miniskirt suits, slim coats, straight-leg trousers and pared-back ensembles.
The spirit of the 1960s was also unmistakable. Some looks were completed with oversized round-frame glasses and short suits inspired by the Mod style.
But the true star of the collection was the stripe. It appeared virtually everywhere — on T-shirts and dresses, bags and hats, and at times transformed into intricate geometric compositions.
Kors drew inspiration for the idea from the work of artist Carmen Herrera. The graphic print looked particularly striking against black and white, which served as a kind of canvas for vivid pops of color.
The colors were impossible to miss. The collection featured shades of amber, tomato red, sunny yellow, coral and pistachio green.
«In big cities, people often wear black, so I try to find ways to bring color into the urban wardrobe. I like to simply add it and create a bright accent», Kors explained.
At the same time, the designer did not sacrifice practicality. Cropped sweaters and shirts were paired with miniskirts or, conversely, elongated shorts. Key details included oversized geometric jewelry, bags with metal handles, crepe dresses with cut-outs, voluminous Baroque-inspired skirts, and embellishments made of sequins and chiffon.
