The Metropolitan Museum Announces the Theme of the 2027 Met Gala

The focus will be on reimagining the everyday
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has announced the theme of the 2027 Met Gala — the biggest fashion event of the year, which traditionally brings together some of the most prominent figures from the worlds of fashion, film and music.
The concept is titled «extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday» and will explore everyday clothing and its reinterpretation.

According to Vogue, the exhibition will feature two thematic sections. The first, «Familiar Forms», will explore how designers reinterpret wardrobe staples such as T-shirts, jeans, trench coats and puffer jackets. The second, «Common Matter», will focus on the unexpected possibilities of materials such as paper, aluminium and plastic. The organisers aim to demonstrate that even the simplest, seemingly unremarkable objects can be given an entirely new life in the hands of talented designers.

The exhibition will be curated by Andrew Bolton, head of the Costume Institute. He described developing the concept as a particular challenge. The Institute had initially planned to dedicate the exhibition to the work of John Galliano, but had to abandon the idea following the public outcry over the designer’s antisemitic remarks in 2011.
Bolton stressed that he did not want to create a simplified alternative to the original concept. The new project had to be just as bold, provocative and visually captivating. It was also important to find a subject that would resonate with the present day.

He pointed to a trend emerging in recent fashion collections: designers are increasingly moving away from excessive showiness in favour of individuality.
This very idea lies at the heart of «extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday» — highlighting the beauty of simplicity and demonstrating that fashion does not have to be grand or spectacular to qualify as art.
As a reminder, the 2027 Met Gala will take place on 3 May.
