Premiere scheduled for 2027

The cancellation of Taylor Swift’s three concerts in Vienna in August 2024 due to a foiled terrorist plot will be the subject of a new documentary. Provisionally titled Taylor Swift Wien, the film will explore the preparations for the attack, the intelligence operation that prevented a tragedy and the reaction of the singer’s fans.

According to ANSA, the documentary will be directed by Andreas Pichler and Veronika Kaserer, with a screenplay by Stefan Kaltenbrunner. The film is being produced by German production company Beetz Brothers Film and Austrian company Markand Media Film.

The documentary will follow three main storylines. The first will reconstruct the intelligence operation, focusing on the efforts of US, British, Austrian and German agencies to prevent the attack. The second will explore the Swiftie community – the singer’s devoted fanbase. In particular, the filmmakers will follow three young women who, after the concerts were cancelled, organised psychological support for fellow fans, established contact with the Austrian police and met with then-Chancellor Karl Nehammer.

The third storyline will examine the background of the main suspect, including his radicalisation online and the preparations for the planned attack.

As a reminder, Taylor Swift was due to perform at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium on 8, 9 and 10 August 2024 as part of her global Eras Tour. More than 200,000 fans were expected to attend the three shows. However, on 6 August, Austrian authorities announced that they had uncovered a terrorist plot. The main suspect, a 19-year-old Austrian citizen, was arrested that same day. According to investigators, he had planned to attack concertgoers using explosives and bladed weapons. On 7 August, the organisers announced that all three shows had been cancelled.

On 29 May 2026, the court sentenced the main defendant, who was 21 at the time, to 15 years in prison. However, the documentary will go beyond reconstructing the events and examining the criminal investigation. It will also show how music and a sense of community helped fans cope with the unexpected cancellation of the concerts.

According to the filmmakers, Taylor Swift’s management has already been informed about the documentary. However, the singer’s own involvement in the project has not been announced.

Taylor Swift Wien is scheduled to premiere on the German television network ZDF in October 2027. The filmmakers are then planning an international release.
