From Audrey Hepburn to Serena Williams: Vogue to release a book of iconic portraits

More than 300 photographs of stars, artists and influential figures
Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue, has unveiled an ambitious photography project titled «Vogue Portraits: A Century of Icons and Idols». The two-volume publication brings together more than 320 iconic photographs from the magazine’s extensive archive, built up over many decades.

The book will be published by Abrams on October 27. Spanning 640 pages, it presents a visual history covering six decades, with portraits of celebrated figures reflecting changes in art, culture and society.

The collection features work by photographers who helped shape the world of fashion photography, including Irving Penn, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, Peter Lindbergh, Cecil Beaton and other renowned artists. The influential figures featured in the book include Jacqueline Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Nicole Kidman, Serena Williams, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cate Blanchett, James Baldwin and many more.

The publication is divided into five thematic sections: «Screen Legends and Movie Stars», «Politicians, Writers and Heroes of the News», «Maestros, Divas and Stage Stars», «Sports Heroes and Champions», and «Artists, Designers and Architects».

According to Wintour, compiling the collection was no easy task. The number of iconic portraits proved so vast that the editorial team initially considered publishing five or even six volumes. Ultimately, however, they managed to bring the story together in two books.

Through the lenses of photographers from different generations, readers will discover how portraiture evolved into a way of capturing the spirit of the times.
