BBC to make documentary about J. K. Rowling: what we know so far

From Harry Potter to Controversial Statements
British broadcaster the BBC has announced a documentary about J. K. Rowling, the author behind the Harry Potter universe. The two-part project will explore the writer’s career — from the creation of the hugely successful literary franchise to the major controversies surrounding her public statements.
The first part will focus on Rowling’s rise to success. The second episode will examine the public debates surrounding her views, particularly her statements on gender identity, feminism, women’s rights and freedom of speech, as well as Scottish independence and the political landscape of the United Kingdom.

The documentary will feature archival footage and interviews with people who have worked with Rowling or know her personally. It has not yet been confirmed whether the writer herself will be interviewed for the project.
David Harron, editor-in-chief of BBC Scotland, said the film aims to explore not only the story behind the creation of a globally renowned book series but also the transformation of British society and culture over the past several decades.

«Joan Rowling is undoubtedly one of the most influential figures in literature and the media as a whole. Her extraordinary life and career provide an opportunity for this project to explore not only the creation of a global phenomenon but also the major social and technological changes of recent years that have shaped British culture», Harron said.
The BBC also highlighted that the approaching 30th anniversary of the publication of the first book about the young wizard makes this a particularly timely moment for a documentary about the author.
The release date has not yet been announced.
