64 years later: Grace Kelly’s granddaughter wears the princess’s iconic dress

Princess Alexandra of Hanover has found a special way to pay tribute to her grandmother, Grace Kelly. She appeared in the original gold Givenchy gown once worn by the legendary Princess of Monaco 64 years ago.
A dress that carries the history of a royal family
To understand what makes the gown so special, we have to go back to May 1962.
At the time, Grace Kelly and her husband, Prince Rainier III, travelled to Athens. They attended celebrations ahead of the wedding of the future King of Spain, Juan Carlos, and Princess Sophia of Greece.
At one of the formal dinners, Grace appeared in a stunning gold Givenchy gown. It featured a fitted silhouette, shimmering embellishments and a small train. She completed the look with long white gloves, a tiara and a diamond necklace.
One interesting detail: on the same day, Grace received a Greek order for women, adding its sash to her evening look. The gown was therefore part of not only a glamorous appearance, but also an important royal occasion.
64 years later – a new life for the gown
Alexandra did not attempt to recreate her grandmother’s look entirely. She kept the gown as the centrepiece of her appearance but gave it a more contemporary styling.
Loose hair, minimal jewellery, a gold bracelet and a small black bag – this is how the princess presented the vintage piece.
Another detail that makes this story especially meaningful
On September 11, Alexandra announced her engagement to Ben-Sylvester Strautmann. The couple have been together for around ten years. Her engagement ring features a large 4.8-carat yellow diamond.
The golden hue of the stone echoes the colour of Grace Kelly’s gown.
In 1962, the Princess of Monaco wore the dress ahead of a major royal wedding. Now, her granddaughter has returned to the same gown as she begins a new chapter of her own life.
Perhaps it is simply a beautiful coincidence. But it is details like these that make family archives so special. A dress once worn by Grace Kelly has returned to the public eye decades later – this time on her granddaughter.
