Meghan Markle loses role in British series

Amid negative audience reaction
Meghan Markle apparently will not be making her return to acting through a high-profile British project. The media recently reported that the Duchess of Sussex had allegedly been considered for a role in the third season of «The Gentlemen», directed by Guy Ritchie.
According to reports, the 45-year-old Markle could have taken on the role of a glamorous and dangerous woman — a «femme fatale». At the time, however, the third season of «The Gentlemen» had not yet been officially approved by Netflix, and Meghan had not signed a contract with the streaming platform.

News of Markle’s potential return to British television nevertheless sparked a strong reaction. According to Just Jared, some members of the British audience responded extremely negatively to the prospect. Journalists reported that the public backlash may have influenced the subsequent negotiations.
Journalist Tina Brown — the former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker — was the first to report that Meghan’s candidacy had allegedly been dropped. According to Brown, the reaction in the UK to the possibility of the Duchess appearing in the series was so negative that continuing negotiations no longer made sense.
