A film about Princess Diana’s wedding dress has been made

The story behind the «gown of the century»
British television has filmed the story behind Princess Diana’s wedding dress. The documentary, titled «Secrets of Diana’s Wedding Dress», will premiere on June 28. For the first time in 40 years, the film will reveal how Lady Di’s legendary «gown of the century» was created, reports People.
The main characters of the film are designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel. It was they who, in 1981, designed the dress for bride-to-be Diana Spencer. In the documentary, they share memories, including how they received an unexpected phone call from the future princess, asking: «Would you like to design my wedding dress?».

At the time, the designers were a young married couple who had just graduated but already had some well-known clients. Diana approached them after seeing their work in Vogue magazine and asked for a gown worthy of a fairytale princess.
The film also reveals a little-known fact: Diana used a fake name – «Deborah Cornwall» – to keep the dress design process as secret as possible from the press.

«When we started meeting with Diana, we were very aware of the need for security, so we decided to call her Deborah. We called her Deborah Cornwall», Elizabeth recalls.
To avoid espionage, the Emanuels destroyed fabric samples and disposed of them in various trash bins. According to the designers, reporters even tried to bribe staff for details.

There was also a backup plan: a second dress was prepared in case the main gown was stolen or damaged. In the end, the backup dress was indeed stolen – but only after the wedding.
