Martha Stewart faces backlash over homeless Halloween costume

The TV personality deleted the post following an outpouring of criticism
American television personality and businesswoman Martha Stewart has found herself at the centre of controversy following an Instagram post. The reason was her Halloween costume, which followers deemed inappropriate and offensive to people experiencing homelessness.
The 85-year-old Stewart appeared in ripped jeans and a worn-out jacket. She completed the look with a sign reading: «I’m hungry, please help me»!

What sparked particular outrage was the fact that the TV personality was also promoting her own candle collection for QVC in the same post. Social media users were unimpressed by the combination and accused her of turning a serious social issue into a joke to promote her products. The post was subsequently deleted.

Stewart later explained that her intention had been to draw attention to the issue of homelessness. She also stressed that she supports charitable organisations that help people facing difficult circumstances.
However, the TV personality eventually acknowledged that her idea had fallen flat and apologised for her actions. She admitted that her earlier explanation had not been enough and that the costume had been insensitive and not funny at all.

«I am truly sorry», Stewart concluded.
