An interior with vintage touches

Hollywood star Julianne Moore has revealed her newly renovated New York apartment. The 65-year-old Oscar winner’s home is located in her favorite neighborhood, Greenwich Village, and she worked on the renovation with her son-in-law, architect and designer Oliver Freundlich. The project took eight months to complete, resulting in a remarkably cozy home that looks nothing like a typical interior.

Julianne Moore and her husband, director Bart Freundlich, live in a two-bedroom duplex apartment. It occupies the upper floors of a 1920s building that was originally a residential hotel.

The windows offer a quintessential New York view: water towers, historic brickwork, decorative tiles, arches, columns and lush rooftop gardens. The apartment also features spacious terraces.

When it came to the renovation, Julianne and Oliver chose not to tear down walls or completely redesign the apartment. Instead, they wanted to preserve its character and make sure none of its original magic was lost.

Moore was particularly determined to keep the original window frames. The kitchen is surrounded by old steel windows, which have become one of the defining features of the space.

The bedroom also presented the designer with a challenge. Its unusual sloping wall made it difficult to fit in a wardrobe, but they eventually managed to make room for both a large bed and an open floor area where Moore practices yoga.

What gives the apartment its greatest sense of warmth, however, are the actress’s personal belongings. Rather than buying everything new, she brought her favorite furniture and decorative pieces from previous homes.

For example, Moore bought the dining chairs in Paris back in 1995. They have moved with her from one home to another ever since. Fabric that was once used for curtains was also given a new life and turned into new window drapes.

The designer also made an effort to update older pieces. The bookshelves were initially supposed to be removed, but instead they were painted a soft grey-beige — and the entire interior was ultimately designed around them.

The living room fireplace underwent a similar transformation. Moore had dreamed of a large sculptural structure, but realized that such a feature could simply «eat up» the room. They therefore opted for a more restrained geometric marble fireplace.

Today, it displays bronze objects created by Moore herself. These personal touches are precisely what make the apartment feel like a true home.

The actress admits that her passion for design has not faded. She loves modernism, but believes that a pre-war apartment comes with its own set of rules.

«My taste remains consistent, although it has evolved over time. I love modernism. But this is a pre-war apartment, and that has to be taken into consideration», Moore said.

The result is a home without any unnecessary display of luxury. Modern furniture sits alongside vintage finds, antiques, original details of the apartment and cherished personal belongings.
