Kim Kardashian tries on Elizabeth Taylor’s legendary necklace
A $12.7 Million Piece of Jewellery
Kim Kardashian got the chance to experience a piece of Hollywood history firsthand. During the promotional tour for the second season of the series «All’s Fair» in Rome, she tried on the famous emerald and diamond necklace once owned by Elizabeth Taylor. The value of the piece, including its detachable pendant, is estimated at more than $12 million.
The special encounter with the jewellery was arranged by Kim’s stylist, Law Roach. For the occasion, Bulgari’s flagship boutique was temporarily closed to visitors. Along with the necklace, Kardashian also tried on a pair of earrings in a similar style. However, they were not the originals: the actual pair that belonged to the actress was not brought to Rome.
The story behind this extraordinary piece of jewellery is tied to one of the most romantic chapters of Taylor’s life. In 1964, the actress married Richard Burton, who gave her the necklace as a wedding present. The piece features 16 Colombian emeralds weighing nearly 61 carats in total, surrounded by diamonds. Attached to it is a detachable pendant set with a large 23.46-carat emerald. Burton had given Taylor the gemstone itself as a gift for her 30th birthday in 1962.
Following Taylor’s death in 2011, her jewellery collection was put up for auction at Christie’s. The legendary necklace sold for $6.13 million, while the pendant fetched an additional $6.58 million. Both pieces later returned to Bulgari’s archives.
Kim shared her impressions on Instagram. She revealed that she had long admired Taylor, not only for her unmistakable style but also for her sincerity, strength of character and willingness to stand up for those whom no one else was prepared to defend. Kardashian also recalled having met the actress and constantly asking her about the jewellery and the stories behind it.
«My love for Elizabeth Taylor runs very deep. She knew how to love fiercely and fought for those no one else wanted to stand up for. And she did it all while wearing incredible jewellery and with an absolutely uncompromising sense of honesty. I have admired her for years and hold her in the highest regard. Getting to try on her jewellery was incredibly special to me», Kim wrote.
She concluded by thanking Law Roach and Bulgari for making a long-held dream come true.
