«Nobody shines all the time»: Kylie Minogue on fame, music and returning home
She graces the cover of Vogue Australia
Pop icon Kylie Minogue is preparing to celebrate her fourth decade in music. To mark the occasion, the 58-year-old singer stars on the cover of the September issue of Vogue Australia, where she answers questions from her friends.
For the photoshoot, Kylie wore looks by Alexander McQueen, Saint Laurent, Chanel, Gucci and Jean Paul Gaultier.
Kylie’s sister Dannii Minogue asked whether she could ever have imagined that her stage costumes, albums and career would one day become the subject of exhibitions, books and documentaries.
Kylie admitted that as a child, she never thought about the fame that lay ahead. Yet she was completely fascinated by the world of pop culture.
«I definitely lived in those daydreams about pop music and pop stars. I had my own idols, but I never consciously thought, “This is what I’m going to do”», the singer recalled.
Behind Kylie Minogue’s glamorous image, it is easy to forget that there is an ordinary person beneath it all — with her own difficult periods, doubts and exhaustion. The singer reminds us of this when she talks about the phenomenon of her «spark».
«Nobody shines all the time. Life isn’t always full of sparkle. Sometimes it’s the difficult moments that make you find your spark or shine even brighter. So whenever we have the chance to shine, we should enjoy it. The rest of life is hard work. We all know that by now», she said.
One of Kylie’s most unexpected answers came when she was asked about her dream. What would she choose if she could be anyone?
Her answer was brief: «Invisible».
Speaking about the character shaped by her homeland, Minogue recalled that Australia gave her a rather down-to-earth outlook on life. But when it came to building a global career, she eventually had to leave the country.
«If you wanted something, you just went for it. And if you wanted a truly global career, generally you had to leave Australia — that’s what many of us did», the singer explained.
Michael Harth, director of the Netflix documentary series about Kylie, asked her perhaps one of the most intriguing questions: what would her younger self say if she could watch a film about the life of the future pop icon?
«I think she would probably say one of three things: “See, you did it.” Or: “I told you so.” Or perhaps: “How the hell did you do that?”», the star replied.
