Meryl Streep to portray Joni Mitchell in a biographical film

Directed by Cameron Crowe
After months of speculation, it has been confirmed that Meryl Streep will portray the legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell on screen. The announcement was made by producer Clive Davis at the annual pre-Grammy party in Los Angeles.
The film will be directed by Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Vanilla Sky, Almost Famous), who has been developing the project for four years in close collaboration with Mitchell herself. The two share a long-standing friendship. According to Crowe, the film will adopt a near-documentary style and will be told from Joni’s own perspective.

The production will also benefit from Mitchell’s remarkable personal archive. She has preserved nearly everything – from stage costumes to musical instruments. Mitchell still owns her iconic home in Laurel Canyon, which she rents out, allowing the film crew rare access to original artifacts and enabling an exceptionally authentic production design.

Joni Mitchell is regarded as one of the most influential singer-songwriters in the history of music. She is the creator of classics such as Both Sides, Now and Big Yellow Taxi, as well as the iconic album Blue. She recently received her 11th Grammy Award in the category of Best Historical Album, and in 2002 the Recording Academy honored her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Today, Joni Mitchell is 82 years old.
