The Golden age of Hollywood: A 1930s home listed for $9 million

Exploring the interior
In Los Angeles, a home built for Oscar-winning Old Hollywood star Melvyn Douglas is on the market for nearly $9 million.
The mansion is located in the prestigious Outpost Estates neighborhood in the Hollywood Hills. It was built in 1938 for Douglas by the renowned California architect Roland Coate. The property sits on a 2.28-acre lot and is gracefully integrated into the hillside, offering breathtaking panoramic views of downtown Los Angeles.

Melvyn Douglas was one of the leading actors of Hollywood’s golden era. He gained widespread fame for his role in the 1939 film Ninotchka alongside Greta Garbo. Later, he won two Academy Awards – for the western Hud (1963) and the satirical film Being There (1979). The actor passed away in 1981.
It is unclear how long Douglas resided in this house. However, given that the mansion is being offered for sale for the first time in nearly 65 years, ownership changes appear to have been infrequent.

The 6,748-square-foot mansion retains the charm of Old Hollywood, featuring numerous original details. The interior showcases wood finishes, fireplaces, and built-in bookshelves in the rooms.
The home is single-story, with a three-car garage located below the living area. Above the garage lies a partially covered terrace that frames the façade and offers city views. In total, the house includes six bedrooms, five full bathrooms, and two guest powder rooms.

The backyard features additional patios and a pool with a diving board. The park-like grounds are adorned with mature landscaping, including avocado trees, as seen in the published photographs.
