A Historic Tie: Two Winners in a Single Category
The curtains have fallen on one of the cinema world’s premier events: the 98th Academy Awards in Los Angeles. Traditionally held at the iconic Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the ceremony honored the finest cinematic achievements of 2025.

The night’s big winner was Paul Thomas Anderson’s Battle After Battle.тThe film swept up six golden statuettes; in addition to clinching Best Picture, it earned Anderson the award for Best Director and dominated the technical categories for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Casting.
Following closely with four awards was Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. The film’s accolades included Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, as well as Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography.
The award for Best Actress went to Irish actress Jessie Buckley for her compelling performance in Hamnet.

Sean Penn took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Battle After Battle. This marks the third statuette of his career, following his previous wins for Mystic River and Milk. Notably, Penn was absent from the ceremony; according to The New York Times, he had departed for Europe on the eve of the awards with plans to travel to Ukraine. Actor Kieran Culkin accepted the award on his behalf.
In the Best Supporting Actress category, 75-year-old Amy Madigan emerged victorious for her performance in Weapon.

Frankenstein also made its mark, securing three awards for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Production Design.

This year’s ceremony featured a truly unprecedented milestone: Autumn Durald Arkapaw won the Oscar for Best Cinematography for Sinners, becoming the first woman in the Academy’s history to win in this category. During her emotional acceptance speech, she addressed her peers:
I am so grateful to be here! I want all the women in this room to stand up, because I wouldn’t be here without you.
The award for Best International Feature Film was bestowed upon Sentimental Value.
Meanwhile, Best Documentary Feature went to Mr. Nobody vs. Putin, a film documenting the imposition of state propaganda on children in Russian schools.
In another historic first, the Best Live Action Short Film category resulted in a tie between two works: Singers and Two People Exchange Saliva. Both films received an equal number of votes from Academy members, leading the board to honor both nominees with the award.

A further innovation this year was the introduction of the first-ever Academy Award for Best Casting, which was presented to casting director Cassandra Kulukundis for her work on Battle After Battle.
As always, the evening in Hollywood drew a constellation of stars. The red carpet saw appearances by Demi Moore, Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, Anne Hathaway, Emma Stone, Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and many others. The ceremony was hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien.
