Just days ago, Meghan Markle celebrated her 45th birthday. To mark the occasion, we look back at how her style has evolved over the past decade. During that time, her wardrobe underwent several remarkable transformations — from effortless Hollywood glamour to the strict royal dress code and, ultimately, to a relaxed Californian aesthetic. Yet despite all these changes, one defining characteristic has remained constant: Meghan has always gravitated toward minimalism, clean silhouettes, and timeless wardrobe staples.

The Hollywood Years: Femininity and Fashion Experimentation

Before meeting Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was best known as a successful American actress. Following the success of the television series Suits, she became a regular presence at premieres, red-carpet events, and high-profile social gatherings.

Her wardrobe reflected the spirit of Hollywood fashion in the 2010s: mini dresses, off-the-shoulder designs, figure-hugging silhouettes, bold colours, statement prints, and high heels. She effortlessly mixed designer labels with affordable brands and was never afraid to experiment with fashion.

At the same time, her appreciation for understated elegance long predated royal life. On her lifestyle blog The Tig, Meghan often wrote about her love for cream, beige, and grey tones and encouraged readers to build a wardrobe around versatile pieces that could easily be mixed and matched.

When Fashion Became Part of the Protocol

After becoming engaged to Prince Harry in 2017, her wardrobe began to change dramatically. Their wedding on 19 May 2018, along with state receptions, diplomatic tours, and official engagements, required an entirely different approach to dressing.

Mini dresses and bold prints gave way to midi dresses, tailored coats, classic pumps, and elegant hats. White, cream, navy, grey, and black gradually became the dominant colours in her wardrobe.

It was only years later that the Duchess revealed this had been a conscious decision. In the 2022 Netflix documentary series Harry & Meghan, she explained that during her years in Britain she deliberately tried not to draw attention through her clothing and avoided bright colours whenever possible.

According to Meghan, she could never wear the same colour as the late Queen Elizabeth II at group engagements, nor should she repeat colours worn by more senior members of the Royal Family. As a result, she often chose camel, beige, and white — shades that were less likely to be worn by other royals and allowed her to blend quietly into the background.

It was during this period that many began to associate Meghan with modern minimalism, even though her affinity for clean lines and understated style had developed long before she joined the Royal Family.

The «Meghan Effect»

During her years as a working royal, fashion commentators even coined a term of their own — the «Meghan Effect». Almost every item she wore sold out within hours of appearing in public.

One of the most famous examples was the handbag from Canadian label Strathberry that Meghan carried during her first public appearance after announcing her engagement. As soon as photographs were published, the bag became an instant bestseller and the brand saw a dramatic surge in sales. The same pattern repeated itself with coats, dresses, shoes, jewellery, and even simple white shirts.

Today, the Duchess makes public appearances far less frequently, and the «Meghan Effect» is no longer as powerful as it was in 2018 and 2019. Even so, her outfits continue to be analysed by Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and other leading fashion publications.

After Moving to California: A Return to Herself

Following the couple’s decision to step back from royal duties in 2020 and relocate to California, Meghan’s style evolved once again. This time, however, the transformation represented a return to her authentic aesthetic.

With fewer formal engagements on her calendar, her wardrobe now features jeans, crisp white shirts, linen tailoring, wide-leg trousers, cashmere knitwear, basic T-shirts, and flat shoes. Fashion editors often describe this look as Montecito casual — a  refined blend of relaxed Californian style, natural fabrics, and impeccable tailoring.

That said, Meghan has not abandoned classic elegance. For formal appearances, she still favours tailored trouser suits, floor-length gowns, and monochromatic ensembles. The difference is that she now embraces off-the-shoulder designs, deeper necklines, mini dresses, leather textures, and richer colours — elements that were once largely restricted by royal protocol.

Beyond Loyalty to a Single Fashion House

Despite her minimalist approach, Meghan rarely commits herself to a single designer. Instead, her wardrobe is built around brands renowned for impeccable tailoring, luxurious natural fabrics, and understated elegance, including Givenchy, Carolina Herrera, Khaite, Loro Piana, Toteme, Gabriela Hearst, Ralph Lauren, Celine, St. Agni, Veronica Beard, and Aquazzura. She completes her looks with understated Cartier jewellery and structured handbags free from excessive embellishment.

Looking back over the past decade, it is easy to see how Meghan Markle’s wardrobe has evolved alongside the different chapters of her life. Yet its defining principles have remained unchanged: impeccable tailoring, natural fabrics, a restrained colour palette, and timeless elegance.

That is precisely why her style is so often regarded as one of the finest examples of quiet luxury — an aesthetic that values craftsmanship, subtlety, and attention to detail over logos and overt displays of wealth.
