Seventy-nine-year-old actress Susan Sarandon was arrested in New York during a pro-Palestinian protest near the United Nations headquarters. The «Thelma & Louise» star joined other demonstrators in blocking a road ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the UN General Assembly.

Sarandon took part in the demonstration wearing a T-shirt bearing the slogan «Fund people not bombs». When protesters occupied the roadway, police repeatedly instructed them to clear the street.

According to the «New York Post», some of the demonstrators moved onto the sidewalk, while others remained seated in the street. Officers then began arresting them one by one. Sarandon was among those detained — the actress was handcuffed and taken to a police bus.

According to authorities and organizers, around 104 people were arrested during the demonstration. Actress Hannah Einbinder, known for the series «Hacks», was also among those detained. Actress and activist Cynthia Nixon and actor Elliot Page were also spotted at the protest.

The demonstrators called for Benjamin Netanyahu to be arrested and held signs demanding an end to military support for Israel.

According to media reports, Oscar winner Sarandon was later released. She was issued a summons to appear in court in connection with an alleged public-order violation.

Venice has been covered with flyers and posters from local activists protesting the upcoming wedding of billionaire Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez.

After the Venice city hall confirmed that the famous couple would be getting married in the «city of water», a group of activists led by local teacher Marta Sottoriva launched a campaign called «No space for Bezos».

According to The Guardian, residents oppose turning Venice into a playground for billionaires and celebrities. The wedding is expected to host over 200 guests, including big names like Leonardo DiCaprio, Oprah Winfrey, Kim Kardashian, Ivanka Trump, and others.

Despite the fact that the billionaire’s event could bring nearly 10 million euros into the city’s budget, protesters are putting up posters in popular tourist spots, handing out leaflets to passersby, and giving speeches in public squares.

«There is a lot of anger in the air, because the council has once again bowed to the logic of profit – our city has been sold to the highest bidder. Every time such an event takes place, Venice freezes: some areas become inaccessible, and the number of tourists surges», activist Sottoriva told the newspaper.

The campaign continues to grow – activists have even hung a banner reading «No to Bezos» on the façade of the San Giorgio Basilica, where Bezos and Sánchez plan to hold their wedding ceremony.
