The events of The Electric State take place in an alternate futuristic version of history set in 1997. The world has suffered a global technological catastrophe. A war, in which humans extensively used high-tech drones, ended with machines going out of control and turning against their creators. As a result, humanity found itself on the brink of total extinction.
