An honorary award
On January 4, 2025, during his final day in office, Joe Biden chose to honor 19 prominent individuals whose achievements in the fields of art, science, and public life have left a significant mark on U.S. history.
At the ceremony, Biden stated that all the award recipients are «truly exceptional individuals» who have helped shape the culture and spirit of the nation through their work and contributions to various fields.
Ralph Lauren became the first designer to receive this award. Biden also recognized his accomplishments as a successful entrepreneur, philanthropist, and advocate for healthcare rights.
Other recipients included American VOGUE editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, actors Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox, musician Bono, basketball player Magic Johnson, and others.
As a reminder, the Presidential Medal of Freedom was established in 1945 by President Harry Truman.
