Oscar-Winning actress Judi Dench has nearly lost her sight

Due to progressive macular degeneration
In a recent interview with ITV News, British actress Judi Dench revealed that she has almost completely lost her vision due to progressive macular degeneration – a condition affecting the central part of the retina.
The disease does not cause total blindness, but it significantly blurs images. As a result, Dench can no longer read, watch television, and has great difficulty recognizing people around her.
«When I go to the theatre, someone has to tell me what’s happening on stage», the actress says.
According to her, she now recognizes people only by their outlines, but can no longer tell who is who.
«I see your silhouette and know it’s you – only because I know you so well. I don’t recognize anyone else anymore», Dench confessed to her friend and colleague Ian McKellen.

Despite these serious challenges, the actress strives to remain part of the theatre world and continues to follow her colleagues’ lives.
The 90-year-old star has spoken about her vision problems before: as early as 2023, she noted that she learns her roles relying solely on her photographic memory.
It is worth adding that Judi Dench has devoted nearly 70 of her 90 years to the craft of acting. Her filmography includes over one hundred works, two Golden Globe awards, an Oscar, and the title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
