Nicolas Sarkozy to publish memoirs about his 20 days in prison

Coming this December
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has written a memoir about the 20 days he spent behind bars. The 216-page book, titled «Diary of a Prisoner», will be published on December 10, according to The Guardian.
In it, the 70-year-old politician recounts his twenty days in La Santé prison. On social media, he shared an excerpt from the memoir describing the conditions of his imprisonment, which became a profound challenge for him:
«There is nothing to look at and nothing to do in prison. I forget about silence – there is none in La Santé, where one can hear so much. Unfortunately, the noise never stops. But like in the desert, behind bars one’s inner life only grows stronger».

According to the former president, the experience was psychologically exhausting:
«I could never have imagined that at the age of 70 I would end up in prison. This ordeal was imposed on me, and I endured it. It is hard – very hard. It leaves a mark on the soul of every inmate because it wears you down».
It should be recalled that Sarkozy was sentenced to five years in prison, but was later released by the court of appeal. He became the first head of state of an EU member country to serve time in jail.
