Kate Middleton debuts a new hair colour at the first state reception of the year

Taking a closer look at the photos
«Everything new is well-forgotten old» is one of Kate Middleton’s favourite fashion principles. The Princess of Wales consistently challenges the stereotype that members of the royal family should never appear in public wearing the same outfit twice. On the contrary, she frequently revisits archival looks from her own wardrobe – a conscious gesture that shifts attention away from clothing and back to the substance of the occasion itself.
This time, Prince William’s wife once again stepped out in an ensemble the public had already seen on two occasions, in 2021 and 2023. Nevertheless, the repeated appearance did nothing to diminish the impact: Kate once again impressed with an impeccable and carefully considered look.
The Princess opted for a red Alexander McQueen trouser suit, pairing it with matching Gianvito Rossi pumps. The striking outfit was completed with earrings by Katherine James and a necklace from Aurée Jewellery.

Kate Middleton’s hairstyle also drew particular attention. Rarely one to experiment with her appearance, the Princess appeared to have subtly refreshed her image after the winter holidays, greeting guests with a newly updated shade of hair colour.

It was in this very outfit that Kate Middleton welcomed the England women’s rugby team to Windsor Castle. As patron of the team, the Princess hosted a ceremonial reception, which marked her first solo royal engagement of the new year. Notably, the choice of red was deliberate: it symbolises the «Red Roses», the nickname of England’s women’s rugby team.

The reception was held in honour of the team’s victory at the Rugby World Cup in September 2025. Due to a breakdown of their coach, the players arrived late, forcing the cancellation of a planned private tour of the residence. During the event, the athletes presented the Princess with commemorative gifts, including a jersey signed by the entire team. Kate Middleton also posed for an official photograph alongside the players and coaching staff.
