«I thought about suicide»: Madonna on her desire to end her life

Music legend Madonna has revealed that she experienced suicidal thoughts during her divorce from director Guy Ritchie. At the time, the pop icon and her former husband were fighting for custody of their son, Rocco.
In an intimate conversation on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, the 67-year-old artist recalled that this period was «one of the most painful moments» of her life.
«There were times in my life when I wanted to end it all. I truly thought about suicide. It probably sounds strange coming from me, because I’m not part of the emo culture. But back then I thought: I can’t take this pain anymore», Madonna confessed.

According to the star, the Rebel Heart Tour in 2016 was an especially grueling test. She shared that before going on stage she would often end up crying on the dressing room floor after difficult phone calls with her lawyers.
«I just lay there thinking it was the end of the world. I couldn’t handle it. But, thank God, it passed», she remembered.
The custody battle over Rocco lasted nearly a year. At 15, he chose to live with his father in the UK. Despite Madonna’s demands to have him returned and her legal fight, her son stayed with Ritchie, and the singer ultimately had to drop her accusations of «unlawful retention» against her ex-husband.

Today, Madonna bears no grudge against Ritchie: «Even though my marriage failed and someone tried to take my child away from me, I had to go through it. In the end, I needed to learn certain lessons», she emphasized.
