Eminem’s Mother, with whom he had a strained relationship, has passed away

The woman was suffering from lung cancer

At the age of 69, Eminem’s mother, Debbie Nelson, passed away. According to TMZ, Nelson died on December 2 in St. Joseph, Missouri, from complications related to lung cancer. Her illness was first reported in September.

Debbie Nelson was just 18 years old when she gave birth to Eminem in October 1972. At birth, he was named Marshall Bruce Mathers III. The boy was born to her high school sweetheart, Marshall Bruce Mathers, whom she married in 1970. The couple divorced after Eminem’s birth.

The relationship between Eminem and Debbie was always strained. In 1999, Nelson sued Eminem for defamation over lyrics on his debut album, The Slim Shady LP, where he alleged that she used drugs.

According to ABC News, Nelson won the lawsuit, receiving $25,000, though she initially sought $11 million in damages. After paying legal fees, she was left with less than $2,000.

In 2008, Nelson published a memoir, My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem, in which she detailed her complicated relationship with her son. The book claimed that much of what her son said about her was fabricated or exaggerated to boost his rap career. She revealed that her 1999 defamation lawsuit against him was an attempt to raise money and avoid foreclosure on her home.

«If I made one mistake as a mother, it was being too indulgent with my eldest son’s every whim. He never knew his father, and I did everything I could to fill that void. I wasn’t happy when he started a new life — what mother would want her son to be seen as an alcoholic, pill-popper, and welfare case? Truth be told, I was heartbroken», — she wrote in the memoir.

In 2013, Eminem released the song Headlights, in which he apologized to his mother for everything.

Years later, in 2022, Nelson missed her son’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but posted a video on social media congratulating him on the achievement.
