Cornelius Obonya appointed honorary UNICEF representative for Austria

Why this matters
At a time when public figures are often criticized for being distant or superficial, some still prove that genuine compassion exists among celebrities. A shining example is Austrian actor and director Cornelius Obonya, who was recently named the new honorary UNICEF representative for Austria.
Obonya is a familiar name on Austria’s artistic stage and in its film industry — not only for his acting prowess but also for his deep cultural heritage. Coming from a renowned theatrical family, he has built a distinguished career in theater, television, and cinema. Beyond the arts, however, Obonya has long been a vocal advocate for social issues and children’s rights.
His collaboration with UNICEF is not new. Over the years, he has participated in several awareness campaigns, including social media videos and radio PSAs supporting the organization’s mission. One of the most notable was last year’s «Kinderlied statt Kinderleid» («Children’s Songs Instead of Children’s Suffering»), which drew widespread public attention.

Obonya’s appointment as an honorary representative underscores the growing importance of engaging well-known personalities in championing children’s rights. In his official statement, he remarked:
«Children have no lobbyists, but they have rights — to protection, to education, and to a life of dignity. If I can help make those rights visible and heard, I will do so with full conviction.»
For context, UNICEF — the United Nations Children’s Fund — has been working since 1946 to protect children’s rights worldwide, fight child poverty, and improve access to education and healthcare. Today, it operates in over 190 countries.
As an honorary representative, Obonya will help raise public awareness about UNICEF’s mission, support fundraising efforts, and lend his voice to important campaigns. Thanks to ambassadors of goodwill like Cornelius Obonya, UNICEF’s message reaches even further.
