«Constant gaslighting»: Britney Spears responds to her ex-husband’s memoir
Another scandal?
Singer Britney Spears has publicly responded to excerpts from the memoir of her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, You Thought You Knew. The book is set to be released on October 21, but some passages have already found their way into the media. In them, Federline describes alleged moments from their life together – including an incident in which he claims to have seen Spears holding a knife near the children’s room. The memoir also mentions Britney’s mental health struggles and her so-called «unstable behavior».
However, the 43-year-old artist refused to stay silent and spoke out emotionally, calling the stories in the book fabrications and accusing her ex-husband of manipulation and of trying to profit from her name.
«The constant gaslighting from my ex-husband is incredibly painful and exhausting. I’ve always dreamed of nothing more than a peaceful life with my sons. I wanted them to be part of my world. But sadly, they grew up in an atmosphere of disrespect toward me, created by their father. One of my sons has seen me only 45 minutes in the past five years, the other just four times. The so-called innocent lies in this book have hit me hard. If you know me, you’d never believe the rumors about my mental health or alcoholism. I’m an intelligent woman who’s been trying to live a quiet life for years. And I’m saying this because I’ve had enough – any real woman would do the same», Britney wrote on social media.
Spears’ representatives also issued a statement, noting that Federline is once again attempting to profit from her name, especially since he stopped receiving alimony payments.
«With the news of the book’s release, Kevin and a few others are once again cashing in on Britney. She’s focused solely on her sons – Sean Preston and Jayden James – and their well-being. She has already shared her true experiences in her own memoir The Woman in Me», said the artist’s spokesperson.
For reference: Britney Spears and Kevin Federline were married from 2004 to 2007. The couple had two sons, who remained in their father’s custody after the divorce.
