Awar Odhiang named «Model of the Year» 2026: 5 facts about fashion’s rising star

From a refugee camp to the world’s runways
The British Fashion Council has named Awar Odhiang Model of the Year, awarding her the title at The Fashion Awards 2026. Over the past year, the 27-year-old model has become one of the industry’s most talked-about rising stars, while her distinctive runway walk has captured the attention of the fashion world and beyond.
Here are five things to know about the model who is rapidly making her mark on the fashion industry.

1. A show-stopping appearance at Chanel
Awar rose to wider prominence after appearing in Matthieu Blazy’s debut show for Chanel. She closed the show, and footage of her runway moment quickly went viral. Rather than the traditionally restrained catwalk walk, the model added dance-inspired moves and smiled throughout her appearance. Her natural ease and genuine joy became one of the show’s most memorable moments.
2. Born in a refugee camp in Ethiopia
Awar’s story began far from the fashion capitals. She was born in the Pugnido refugee camp in Ethiopia. Her parents are originally from South Sudan, which they were forced to leave because of the civil war. The family later moved to Canada.

3. Working with the world’s leading fashion houses
Following her success on the Chanel runway, Odhiang’s career quickly gained momentum. She has walked for Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Gucci, Balenciaga, Versace and Schiaparelli, and has also appeared at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
Awar has also fronted advertising campaigns for Saint Laurent, Prada and Chanel Eyewear. Other brands she has worked with include Chloé, Louis Vuitton, Loro Piana and H&M.

4. Featured on eight international magazine covers in 2026
This year has been particularly busy for the model, not only in terms of runway appearances and advertising campaigns. In 2026, Odhiang graced eight international fashion magazine covers. They included Vogue Italia’s special February issue, the French and American editions of Harper’s Bazaar, as well as i-D and WSJ.

5. She wants to make the fashion industry more inclusive
Odhiang is not only building her own career but also advocating for greater representation of Black models on runways and in advertising campaigns. She speaks openly about the barriers models still face and hopes to make the industry more accessible to people from different backgrounds.

Being named Model of the Year was a particularly meaningful moment for Awar. Reflecting on her win, she emphasized the importance of staying true to herself and embracing her individuality.
«I have always believed that you can be both kind and strong, gentle and resilient. You don’t have to dim your own light to find your place, or give up your softness to prove your strength. I hope my story will continue to remind others of that. I am endlessly grateful for this moment and everything it represents. Thank you to everyone who believed in me and embraced me exactly as I am», the model shared.

Laura Weir, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council, congratulated the winner, praising her distinctive energy, authenticity and ability to inspire others. Anita Bitton, Chair of the judging panel, highlighted Awar’s determination, professional growth and ability to maintain her curiosity and passion for her work.
The awards ceremony will take place on November 30 at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
