The Bezos Foundation will allocate $34 million to the development of synthetic textiles

From eco-fibres to plastic-free silk
The Bezos Earth Fund, founded by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, will invest $34 million in the development of synthetic textiles – ranging from biodegradable fibres to plastic-free synthetic silk.
Among the recipients of the grants are Columbia University, the University of California, Berkeley, Clemson University, and The Cotton Foundation.

Researchers will work on creating materials capable of replacing cotton and polyester, as well as on alternatives to natural silk that do not require the use of silkworms.
According to representatives of the fund, these studies are expected to help reduce microplastic emissions and lessen environmental pressure.
It is anticipated that the new materials could reach the fashion market within the next five years.
