Zoe Saldaña becomes the highest-grossing actress in history
Surpasses Scarlett Johansson
American-Dominican actress Zoe Saldaña has set a new box-office record, topping the list of the highest-grossing actresses of all time. The total worldwide earnings of films featuring the star have reached $15.47 billion, according to industry outlet The Numbers.
The decisive factor was the release of «Avatar: Fire and Ash». James Cameron’s latest film, which premiered at the end of last year, has already grossed more than $1.23 billion worldwide, enabling Saldaña to overtake the previous chart leader, Scarlett Johansson.
In addition, Zoe Saldaña has become the first actress to appear in three of the highest-grossing films in cinema history: «Avatar» (2009), its sequel «Avatar: The Way of Water» (2022), and «Avengers: Endgame» (2019). Last year, Saldaña also won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the Netflix crime musical «Emilia Perez».
Other major franchises also played a significant role in achieving this record. Saldaña’s portrayal of Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – including the «Guardians of the Galaxy» trilogy and several «Avengers» films – was a major contributor to her box-office success. She has also appeared in the «Star Trek» franchise and in the first installment of «Pirates of the Caribbean».
The actress has already commented on her new status on Instagram, thanking everyone who supported her along the way:
«I simply want to express my sincere gratitude for this incredible journey that led me to becoming the highest-grossing actress in history. This was only possible thanks to the powerful franchises, the partners I was fortunate to work with, and every director who placed their trust in me», wrote the 47-year-old star.
According to The Numbers, the next positions in the overall ranking of highest-grossing actors are held by Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Pratt. Among actresses, Emma Watson ranks 16th, Karen Gillan 23rd, and Elizabeth Olsen 25th.
Previously, the list was led by Scarlett Johansson, who claimed the top spot following the success of «Jurassic World: Rebirth», which earned $869 million worldwide, and who is also closely associated with Marvel projects.
