Media: Julia Roberts and Richard Gere to star in a «Pretty Woman» sequel

35 years after the film’s release
The iconic 1990 film Pretty Woman may be getting a sequel. According to Western media reports, the studio is currently discussing the possibility of producing a follow-up featuring the original leading actors, Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.
It has been 35 years since the love story of the wealthy and charming Edward Lewis and the sex worker Vivian Ward captivated audiences around the world and became one of the most successful romantic comedies in cinema history. In 1990, Roberts was just 23 years old, while Gere, in his early forties, was widely regarded as a true sex symbol. Today, the actress is 57, and her on-screen partner is 76. The film not only cemented Roberts’ status as a major star but also made her partnership with Gere one of Hollywood’s most recognizable duos.
Interestingly, the role of the millionaire was initially intended for other renowned actors, including Sean Connery, Al Pacino, and Burt Reynolds. However, fate had other plans, and the part ultimately went to Gere.
According to insiders, the new project will not be a direct replica of the original. Instead, it is expected to be a more mature and nostalgic continuation, depicting the characters decades after the events of the first film. At present, the screenplay is in the early stages of development, and there have been no official confirmations from either the actors or the studio.
The idea of a sequel is already being actively debated among fans. Some are enthusiastic about the prospect of seeing the legendary couple reunite on screen, while others believe that a classic should be left untouched, as it has achieved cult status without a continuation.
It is worth noting that several years ago, Roberts stated that she did not support the idea of a sequel, arguing that the storyline of the original film has lost its relevance in today’s world.
Whether Pretty Woman will ultimately receive a sequel remains to be seen.
