The fighter released a video address

Former UFC champion in two weight divisions, Conor McGregor, has called on his supporters to ensure that his name is added to the ballot for Ireland’s presidential election, scheduled for October. McGregor posted a video message on Instagram, recorded outside the government building in Dublin.

«If you want to see my name on the presidential ballot, I strongly encourage you to contact your local councillors today and ask them to nominate me,» McGregor declared.

He drew attention to what he described as the «unprecedented rise» in the number of homeless Irish children — a situation which, in his view, «reflects the government’s refusal to uphold and respect our statement that all children of Ireland must be cared for.»

The athlete also referred to the massive influx of migrants «into an already depleted system,» the decline of tourism, and the growing dangers on the streets.

It should be recalled that McGregor had first spoken about his plans to run for the presidency back in March. Just last week, he claimed he had already secured his place in the race, according to The Irish Times. However, McGregor’s name did not appear on any list of candidates who had reached out to local councils in an effort to gain their backing.

To be included on the ballot, McGregor needs the support of 20 members of parliament or four local or county councils.

About Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor was born on July 14, 1988, in Dublin, Ireland. In his youth, he played football and practiced boxing before taking up mixed martial arts.

He began his professional MMA career in 2008 and signed with the UFC in 2013. In 2015, he captured the interim featherweight title and, only a few months later, became the undisputed champion by knocking out José Aldo. In 2016, he made history as the first UFC fighter to simultaneously hold titles in two weight divisions — featherweight and lightweight.

Beyond his sporting career, McGregor is also known as an entrepreneur. He launched the whiskey brand Proper No. Twelve, the clothing line August McGregor, and is involved in several other business ventures.

About the Irish Election

The election will take place on October 24, with nominations closing on September 24. The president of Ireland is elected for a seven-year term and may serve no more than two terms. While the role is largely ceremonial, the president has key powers, including appointing the prime minister, ministers, and judges, as well as signing legislation into law.

McGregor has already received support on social media from Elon Musk, who wrote:

«No one will fight harder for the people of Ireland than Conor McGregor,» he noted.
