On the Role in «Titanic»
Hawke admitted that he is glad he did not get the role of Jack Dawson in Titanic – it went to Leonardo DiCaprio. According to Hawke, he «would not have handled that level of fame» as successfully as DiCaprio did.
On the Divorce from Uma Thurman
Hawke described his divorce from Uma Thurman as a «humiliating experience», particularly due to the relentless attention from tabloids. Their marriage, once considered a model Hollywood union, fell apart amid rumors of infidelity. At the time, journalists linked Hawke to Angelina Jolie, but the reality was more mundane: the actor began a relationship with the nanny of their shared children, Ryan Shawhughes, whom he later married.
«It was humiliating», Hawke admits. «The paparazzi never gave me peace and asked daily about affairs. In acting, sparks often fly between men and women – a creative closeness. It has nothing to do with real life, but sometimes boundaries blur, and you can go too far».
Hawke says he still feels the consequences of those mistakes. Thurman secured appropriate financial support for the children, and Hawke openly acknowledges that supporting his family has been a serious challenge.
«I don’t want to take on projects just for the money. But I’m over fifty, and I have to pay child support, health insurance, provide for my kids’ education, and support charitable organizations. It means working twice as much as I’d like», the actor explains.
On New Projects
In the coming months, audiences will see Hawke in three films: the drama Wildcat, the horror film The Black Phone 2, and the historical feature Leave the World Behind, in which he stars alongside Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali.
Hawke believes that every new challenge – professional or personal – helps him grow and discover new dimensions of his talent.
