Mattel releases first-ever doll with diabetes

Inspired by model Lila Moss
Mattel has introduced the first-ever Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes. The doll features a continuous glucose monitor, an insulin pump, and a smartphone with an app to track blood sugar levels.
The toy is the result of a collaboration with the nonprofit organization Breakthrough T1D, which supports people living with this diagnosis.
According to the manufacturer, the doll is part of the Barbie Fashionista line – an inclusive collection that celebrates diversity in appearance and life experiences.
Barbie is dressed in a blue polka dot top – a pattern chosen deliberately, as the blue circle is the international symbol for diabetes awareness.
The new Barbie is inspired by Lila Moss, the daughter of supermodel Kate Moss, who lives with diabetes herself.
«The introduction of a Barbie with type 1 diabetes is an important step in our commitment to inclusivity and representation», said Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of the Barbie brand.
According to her, the new doll is more than just a toy – it’s a way to support children living with diabetes and to help them feel seen. Mattel strives to ensure that every child can see themselves reflected in their favorite dolls. By representing conditions like diabetes, the company helps foster empathy and acceptance.
Notably, Mattel has previously released Barbie dolls with various differences, including hearing aids, wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, and even Down syndrome.
