In response to tariffs: China plans to ban American films

Hollywood could lose millions
China’s authorities are preparing a response to the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on various countries, and one potential measure could be banning the screening of American films in local cinemas.
This is not an official plan from the Chinese government, but rather the opinion of experts who are analyzing the situation and forecasting possible countermeasures.
According to them, a ban on film imports could significantly impact box office revenues. For example, the «Minecraft» adaptation opened with $162 million in the US, while in China it earned $14.5 million. Although the difference seems huge, that Chinese sum still accounted for 10% of the global revenue — second only to the UK, which brought in $19 million.
Last year’s «Venom» performed better in China than in any country except Mexico, the UK, and the US, while «Deadpool & Wolverine» earned a solid $60 million there.
If China does go through with the import ban, it could hit the earnings of upcoming blockbusters like «Superman,» «Fantastic Four,» «Jurassic World: Rebirth,» and several others set for release in 2025.
China’s official stance on the issue remains unknown for now.
