Best film of 2025? «Minecraft» breaks box office records

What a result!
The film Minecraft, based on the popular video game, has had a triumphant debut in US cinemas, grossing an impressive $157 million in its opening weekend.
This result exceeded all expectations and became the best opening ever for a video game adaptation, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Nintendo and Illumination, which earned $146 million during its 2023 debut.
However, globally, Mario still holds the top spot with $377 million earned in its first weekend. Still, according to Variety, Minecraft: The Movie has already grossed around $301 million worldwide, making it one of the biggest releases of 2025.
Before the premiere, analysts cautiously predicted the film would make between $70–90 million over the weekend. But reality turned out to be much more impressive, despite lukewarm critical reception — the film has only 49% on Rotten Tomatoes.
«Minecraft hits right in the heart of the mass audience — from kids to adults. Projects like this are made for viewers, not critics. When a film becomes a hit, all earlier forecasts become irrelevant,» explained analyst David A. Gross.
The film stars major Hollywood names: Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Jennifer Coolidge, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen.
The story follows four misfits who accidentally fall through a mysterious portal into the world of Minecraft — a strange, blocky wonderland where everything is built from imagination. To find their way back home, the heroes must adapt to new rules of reality and come together as a team. Along the way, they meet an unexpected mentor — a seasoned master who helps them unlock their potential and survive the most dangerous challenges.
It’s worth noting that Warner Bros. launched a massive marketing campaign ahead of Minecraft’s release. One especially successful collaboration was with McDonald’s: not only were toys added to Happy Meals, but a special film-themed merchandise giveaway began. Massive queues formed with people eager to get one.
What’s more, TikTok and Instagram are now flooded with videos reviewing the toys and merchandise.
Let us remind you that Minecraft is a true cultural phenomenon. Since its launch in 2009, it has become the best-selling video game of all time, with over 300 million copies sold worldwide.
In 2024, the number of active monthly players reached approximately 174 million, showing the game’s incredible popularity even 15 years after release. The game’s huge success also led Microsoft to acquire Mojang, the developer of Minecraft, in 2014 for $2.5 billion.
