Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces resignation

After 9 years in office
Earlier, rumors were circulating online about the resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Several media outlets reported that he faced challenges following the unexpected resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
The rumors were confirmed recently: Justin Trudeau announced his resignation. He also stated that he would step down as the leader of the Liberal Party after the party elects a successor, who will automatically become the new head of government.
«I intend to resign as party leader and as prime minister after the party elects its new leader», Trudeau said.

Trudeau has led the party since 2013 and became Canada’s youngest prime minister in history in 2015.
Among his achievements, he highlighted strengthening the country’s middle class, environmental policy, and the support and aid Canada provided to Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion.
«We came together to support each other during the pandemic… To stand firmly with Ukraine and our democracy, to fight climate change, and to prepare our economy for the future. We are at a critical moment in the world», he added.

Following Trudeau’s resignation announcement, newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his proposal for uniting Canada with the United States.
«Many people in Canada love the idea of being the 51st state. The United States can no longer bear the huge trade deficits and subsidies Canada requires to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned», the statement read.
Recall that on December 3, 2024, Fox News reported that Trump had proposed Canada become the 51st U.S. state. Canada responded, calling it a humorous joke.
