Trends and new slang
The TikTok platform has evolved from a simple video editing and sharing app into a space where emerging singers, bloggers, and creators gain recognition, promote their songs and ideas, and even set new trends.
This year, TikTok published statistics highlighting the emergence of phrases in youth slang such as «very demure, very mindful» and «brat summer» (referring to spontaneous adventures and late-night escapades). Notably, «very demure, very mindful» was named Expression of the Year by Dictionary.com, while brat («a confident individual») earned the title from Collins Dictionary.
One of the most popular communities this year was #BookTok, a literary group encouraging reading and promoting new genres. Users have created over 1.2 million posts in this category.
In late autumn, the trend #WomenInMaleFields also gained traction, mocking abusive behavior by men towards women.
In music, the clear trendsetter of the year was Mexican creator Yeri Mua, whose track Linea del Perreo became a viral hit. However, in the U.S. charts, the top spot went to American singer Sabrina Carpenter, with her summer hits Espresso, Please Please Please, and Taste.
